Zola Wayland Hatmaker (Hattie) McKee

Zola Wayland Hatmaker (Hattie) McKee, 90, died July 27, 2017. She was the oldest daughter of Charles Luther and Beulah Mae Hatmaker of Campbell County, TN. She was one of eight surviving children. A sibling, Gleason Hatmaker, predeceased her in infancy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Edward McKee, and a son, Michael Edward McKee. She is survived by one son, James W. (Taronna) McKee, seven grandchildren, Amelia, Virginia, John, Sean, Jackson, Olivia, and Sophia. She is also survived by one sister, Ann (Hatmaker) Loudermilk, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and extended family, all of whom she dearly loved. She was a lifelong Christian, exemplifying a life of service, compassion, and cheerful generosity to all. She was a long time member of South Elkhorn Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Berea College Nursing Program class of 1952, and was a registered nurse. Hattie retired from the Veteran’s Administration Hospital after 33 years of service. Many of her suggestions and efforts brought positive changes in protocols, some of which were implemented system wide throughout the V A hospitals, bringing better care to veterans. Hattie had a love for life, a call to service of others, and a special kindness for all. She was the recipient of numerous distinguished awards and commendations for her work with various Baptist church groups, the V A hospital system, and several civic organizations. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 1st from 5 – 7 pm at Milward Funeral Home on Southland Drive, Lexington, KY. There will be another visitation from 5-7 pm on Wednesday, August 2nd at Farrar Funeral Home in Jefferson City, Tennessee. Funeral service will follow at 7 pm. with Rev. Darrell Chambers officiating. Burial will be at Jefferson Memorial Garden, Jefferson City, TN, at 11:00 am on Thursday August 3rd. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association, Berea College, Taylor Manor Nursing Home – Versailles, KY, or one’s favorite charity.
