William Granade Dixon

William Granade Dixon, age 102, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2017. Bill was born in Trenton, North Carolina, on July 7, 1914, the son of Daniel Joseph Dixon and Mary Koonce Dixon. He is preceded in death by his wife, June Burton Dixon, his brother, Daniel Joseph Dixon, Jr., and sister, Louise Dixon Hines. Bill graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1936. He entered the Army Air Corps as a commissioned officer, serving in WWII from 1942 through 1945, as a B-17 squadron commander. After a brief period in the Reserve Corps, he was honorably discharged in 1946. Bill returned from the war to a long and successful career in the textile industry, beginning in Winston-Salem and Elkin, North Carolina. Starting in sales, he founded and later owned Hickory Color & Chemical in Hickory, North Carolina. He retired in 1979, splitting time with his wife and family between Asheville, North Carolina and Kiawah Island, South Carolina. In late 2009, following the death of his wife, he returned to his beloved Trenton, North Carolina and lived independently until his death. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m. in the afternoon on Saturday, June 24, at Trenton United Methodist Church, Trenton, North Carolina.
