REV. WALTER EDWIN SCHLECHTER,JR., age 77, of Dandridge, TN went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 26, 2010. He was born in West Palm Beach, Florida and moved to the Dandridge area after graduating from Carson-Newman College. During his life, Walter served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict, worked in the field of education, serving as a teacher at Dandridge Elementary and Riverdale Middle School until his retirement, and also was an ordained minister with the Church of the Brehtren. Preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mary Schlechter, Sr.; first wife, Shelby Jean Williford Schlechter; brother-in-law, Henry Ruffolo. Survived by wife of 30 years, Maxie Hicks Schlechter of Dandridge; daughter, Daphne (Byron) Schlechter Fielder of Knoxville, TN; sons, Edwin and Benjamin Schlechter, both of Dandridge; step-children, Marty (Suzanne) Cate and Pam Cate, all of Dandridge; sisters, Mary Belle Rullo of West Palm Beach, FL and Janice Cole of Melbourne, FL; brothers, John (Eleanor) Schlechter of Belle Glade, Florida and Alvin (Sandra) Schlechter of Niceville, FL; grandchildren, Joseph (Tina) Cate, Heather (Danny) Harrison, and James Cate and his fiance` Chelsea Harris; five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; special friends, J. W. and Juanita Worth. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at the French Broad Church of the Brethren with Rev. Ron Wine, Dr. Robert McCray and Rev. Ron Spire officiating. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. The body will be moved to the church to lie in state one hour before the service. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Farrar Funeral Home in Dandridge, TN.
