VIVIAN WHITAKER TATE, age 88, of Johnson City, TN and formerly of Jefferson City, TN passed away Wednesday morning, March 4, 2009. She was born September 28, 1920 in Piney Flats, Tennessee to Luther and Mary Baker Whitaker. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Jefferson City. Mrs. Tate enjoyed doing volunteer work and spent several years volunteering at Jefferson County Nursing Home, Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Emmanuel Baptist Church, and Appalachian Outreach Ministry. She also made two trips to Costa Rica doing volunteer mission work, and began doing volunteer work at Appalachian Christian Village Retirement Center five days after moving there on April 5, 2003. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ernest Clay Tate; brother, Mitchell Whitaker; sister, Margaret Whitaker Barr. She is survived by brother, Charles Whitaker of Bristol, TN; sisters, Aileen Whitaker Cutshaw of Winchester, VA, Helen Whitaker Houston of Piney Flats, TN; step-son, Robert C. Tate of Talbott, TN; step-daughters, Margot Music and Linda Gentry, both of Knoxville, TN; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind many dear in-laws and friends. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Farrar Funeral Home in Jefferson City with Dr. Sonny Strange officiating. Graveside interment service will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
