THOMAS E. NORTHERN, SR. was born to John W. and Emma Northern January 11, 1931. He was preceded in death by his brothers: Horace Winton, Lilburn, Earl A., Raymond P., John Wesley, Jr., and sisters: Jennie Nance and Mary Lou Crosby, and several nieces and nephews. He leaves his devoted wife, Anna Joyce of the home: son, Thomas E. Northern, Jr. of Waynesville, NC; grandchildren, Aimee Yanez of Suffolk, VA, Carlton (Callie) Northern of Portsmouth, VA, Matthew (Kim) Marson of Murfreesboro, TN, Melissa Marson of Jersey City, NJ; great-grandchildren; James Yanez and Shane Northern; and several nieces and nephews. Tommy (as he was more affectionally called) graduated from Jefferson City High School, lettering in three sports and was president of his 1948 graduating class. He received a BS Degree from Carson-Newman College, lettering in baseball and football, president of his graduating class, the Physical Education Club, and the Athletic Club. He was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force serving in Japan in the Sixty Ninth Twenty-first Radio Squadron Mobile. He received the MS Degree from University of Tennessee, and the BD Degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Society. He taught and coached basketball and baseball at Hiwassee Junior College, Madisonville, TN; taught at Winter Park High School, Winter Park, FL, coaching varsity football and varsity baseball. He continued his teaching career in Jefferson County, TN as a principal and teacher. He became an ordained deacon at North Park Baptist Church, Orlando, FL, and taught men’s Sunday School classes for many years. He enjoyed singing in the choir, and playing in the church softball league. Tommy loved people and was a friend to everyone. He enjoyed serving his high school and college graduating classes since graduating. Tommy was a member of Manley Baptist Church and the Retired Teachers Association of Jefferson County, serving as treasurer for eight years. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 11, 2017 at Manley Baptist Church. Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at White Pine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Building Fund of Manley Baptist Church, 3603 W.
