DR. ROY A DOBYNS, age 82, of Dandridge, Tennessee passed away peacefully at the Jefferson County Nursing Home on November 12, 2013. Born January 31, 1931 in Bristol, Virginia, he was a son of the late Roy and Frances Dobyns and was raised by his late aunt and uncle, Meta and John King of Knoxville, Tennessee. Roy was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jefferson City. He loved his church and served as a deacon, trustee, and on many committees. Roy was a charter member of the Jefferson City Rotary Club and a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Rotarian award. He was named the 1994-95 Distinguished Alumnus for Carson Newman College and was an Army veteran. Dr. Roy A. Dobyns was a leader in higher education authoring college level mathematics textbooks, serving on the faculty of Louisiana College, McNeese State University, Georgetown College, Clayton State University and was the Vice President and Academic Dean of Carson Newman College, President of Bluefield College, and served on the Board of Trustees at Cumberland College. He graduated from Carson Newman College, received a Masters at Vanderbilt University, and a Ph.D. from Peabody College. Roy was an avid golfer, enjoyed traveling and Tennessee football. Roy loved his family, his work and his many friends in the community. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Kathryn, of Dandridge, Tennessee; one cousin, Betty Hobbs and husband, Charles of New Market, Tennessee; his children, Roy A. Dobyns, Jr. and wife Robin of Boone, North Carolina, John Dobyns and his wife Carol of Raleigh, North Carolina, Joe Dobyns and his wife Donna of Jefferson City, Tennessee; grandchildren, Katy King and husband Adam, Kyle Dobyns, Jessica Dobyns and fiancé Kevin Gray, Kayla Dobyns, Trey Dobyns, and Carly Jo Dobyns; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to express appreciation for the loving care given by the staff at the Jefferson County Nursing Home. Funeral services for Dr. Roy A. Dobyns will be conducted at the First Baptist Church of Jefferson City, Tennessee on Friday, November 15 at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Gene Wilder officiating. Graveside service and burial will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
