ROBERT CAMPENELLA “MAJOR” GREENE was born on December 15, 1952 in Virgie, Kentucky to the union of Hugh Bowen Greene and Donzie Lee Russell. He was the third of six children. His family moved to Portsmouth, Ohio where he attended and graduated from Portsmouth High School. He was drafted into the United States Army serving two years as a military policeman. He returned to Ohio briefly before joining Uncle T and Auntie (Ulys and Freddie Mae Debose) in Jefferson City, Tennessee. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Carson Newman College. He married Della Tate and gained two sons. He later met and married Mary Ann Sherfield and gained two daughters. He was a member of Martha Davis Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and was a member of the Brotherhood. Major would give you the shirt off his back if he knew you needed it, and he never met a stranger. He loved to talk and always had a story to share. He loved to fish and play golf. For the last ten years he hosted Bar-B-Que Weekend in June, that consisted of all the “little boys” he grew up with in Portsmouth, Ohio. He was a supervisor at Rittenhouse, but retired from Vifan a few years ago. He was preceded in death by his parents; spouse, Mary Ann; sister, Belinda Faye Connally; nephew, Hugh Greene; grandparents, Mary Washington, Willie (Bettye) Brown, Thomas (Girthie Simpson) Greene; uncle and aunt, Ulys and Freddie Mae Debose; special friend, Sharon Bryant; and beloved dog, Max. He gained his angel wings on Friday, January 12, 2024 sitting in his favorite chair at home. He leaves to cherish his memory: sons, Jerry (Farrah) Tate and Calvin Tate; daughters, Theria and Natime Bowen; brothers, Hugh (Cynthia) Greene, Larry (Gail) Greene, Stacey (Cheryl) Greene; sisters, Freddie Kay (Samuel) Johnson and Dondrianna (Mark) VonderEmbse; brothers-in-law, Nathaniel Connally, Dale and Dana Sherfield; aunts, Shirley Harbin, Donna Greene and Janie (Charles) Ayers; uncles, Willie Brown, Jr., David (Katherine) Brown and Robert (Ollie) Brown; great-uncle, David (Myrna) Boyd; best friend, Carleton Cave; a host of nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; great-great nieces and nephews; many, many cousins (Jeanette, Doris, Pat, Meryl); other relatives and friends; and beloved dog, Chemo. Funeral service will be held at 9:00 a.m. Friday, January 26, 2024 at Farrar Funeral Home with Bishop Anthony Spann and Over-seer Shirley Kyle. Family and friends will then gather at 10:45 a.m. at Jefferson Memorial Gardens for an 11:00 a.m. graveside interment service.
