BURTS, SR., age 88, of Jefferson City, TN, Emeritus Professor of History at Carson-Newman College, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2005 at Jefferson Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was born October 12, 1917 in Abbeville, South Carolina. He grew up near Honea Path, SC, where his grandfather was a long-time pastor of the Broadmouth Baptist Church. After high school in Honea Path, he received his A.B. from Berry College, his M.A. from Duke University, and his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. He taught history in the Clinton, SC High School for six years, Presbyterian College at Clinton, for five years, and concluded his teaching career with 32 years at Carson-Newman College. Preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Alice Brooks Burts, and brother, Henry W. Burts. Survived by his wife of 54 years, Frieda Culberson Burts; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Donna Burts of Jefferson City; daughter and son-in-law, Amanda Burts and Mike Kelischek of Brasstown, NC; sister, Betty Burts Peters of Elizabethtown, KY; niece, Libby Peters Frost of Elizabethtown, KY; nephew, James Peters of Lake Oswego, Oregon; cousins, Marian A. Burts of Honea Path, SC, Dr. Richard Burts of Greenville, SC, Ruth Burts King of Greenville, SC, Albert Burts and Sidney Burts of Columbia, SC. Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening, December 6, 2005 at First Baptist Church of Jefferson City with Dr. Gene Wilder officiating. Family and friends will gather at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, December 7, 2005 at Westview Cemetery for a 2:00 p.m. graveside interment service. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. prior to the funeral services at the church.
