He was a member of First Baptist Church of Dandridge. He served in the US Navy during World War II on the Destroyer U.S.S. Taylor in the Pacific and received 13 Major Battle Stars. He was a former trustee of the French Broad Baptist Church of Dandridge, served on the Shady Grove Utility District Board of Directors, and also served as Jefferson County Election Commissioner. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1971. Preceded in death by infant daughter, Stephanie; parents, Joe Berry and Marie Clark Sams; brother, Tom Sams. Survived by wife, Margie Miller Sams; sisters, Betty Jo Rogers of Virginia, Christine (Bill) Lovelace, Nancy (Buford) Fox; brothers, Roy (Terry) Sams, Jack Sams, all of Dandridge; sisters-in-law, Lois Brown Wilson, Mabel Moore, Vivian (Kenneth) Thornhill, Janice Satterfield, Barbara Sams, Wendy Sams; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and special nieces, Susan (Danny) Johnson, Amy Johnson and Holly (David) Burton. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to special caregiver, Rev. Rosie Cuberson, Dr. Bill Ramsey, staff of Adventa Hospice, his church family and Jefferson County Nursing Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your favorite charity. Funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 10, 2008 at First Baptist Church of Dandridge with Dr. Robert McCray, Dr. Robert Brown and Rev. Ron Wine officiating, followed by interment at French Broad Baptist Cemetery in Dandridge with military honors by East TN Veteran Honor Guard.
