PRISCILLA MCPHERSON MCCOIG, age 101, gave up her worldly cares in Newport News, VA on September 9, 2009. Born July 30, 1908 in Adair County, Iowa to Forrest S. and Ida Mount McPherson, she graduated from Asbury College in 1930. A retired school teacher, she taught in several school systems in Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida and Iowa, and she coached the 1935 National Spelling Bee champion. Mrs. McCoig was a member of Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church. She had traveled throughout the world with her sister and friends and enjoyed her last trip to Europe at the age of 91. Mrs. McCoig was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Austin G. McCoig; parents, Forrest and Ida McPherson; and brother, Chase McPherson. She is survived by her son, Dr. Forrest D. McCoig and wife Janet; four grandchildren, James, Amy, Laura and Kelly; eleven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Inez Winslow. A special thanks to Newport News Nursing and Rehab Center for their professional and loving care. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 12, 2009 at White Pine Cemetery in White Pine, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to a favorite charity.
