Nellie Ward Briggs

NELLIE WARD BRIGGS, age 94, of White Pine, TN and a resident of the Jefferson County Nursing Home, passed away Thursday morning, October 15, 2009 at St. Mary's Jefferson Memorial Hospital. She joined the First Baptist Church of White pine in 1938, where she was a very active member and had served as church treasurer for many years. Nellie and her husband, Calvin, were part owners of the Sanitary Drug Company of White Pine, where she served as the company bookkeeper. Preceded in death by her husband, Calvin W. Briggs; parents, John and Alice (Taylor) Ward; brothers, William (Bill), Hubert and Floyd Ward; sisters, Carrie Ward and Nora Holt. Survived by daughter, Phyllis (Terry) McCracken of White Pine; son, John (Dene) Briggs of Kingsport, TN; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Tammy) Taylor of White Pine, Shannon (Jim) Holloway of Brooklyn, NY, Wesley (Catherine) Briggs of Houston, TX; great-grandchildren, Megan and Brooke Taylor, Carolyn and John Briggs. The family wishes to acknowledge their sincere appreciation to the staff of the Jefferson County Nursing Home and the staff of St. Mary's Jefferson Memorial Hospital for their wonderful care and compassion and a special thank you to her many dear friends who took a part in her life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts be made to the First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 590, White Pine, Tn 37890, or the Jefferson County Nursing Home Activity Fund, 914 Industrial Park Road, Dandridge, TN 37725. Funeral service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of White Pine with Reverend Brian Osborne, Reverend Charlie Harkleroad and Reverend Charles Robison officiating. Family and friends will meet at 1:45 p.m. Sunday at Dandridge Memorial Gardens for a 2:00 p.m. graveside interment service.
