MELMER MAGDALENE RAY, age 91, of Dandridge, TN went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at her residence. Born on September 23, 1920 to the late Walter Calvin Evans and Curley Jones Evans, Mrs. Ray spent her life in service of the church and caring for others. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alger Eugene Ray; two sons, Harold Ray (infant) and Jacinto Blake Ray; a daughter, Magdalene Ray (infant); brothers, Walter E. Evans, Peter Jackson Evans, and Herman Hicks; sisters, Lilly Mae Owens, Virginia Cuberson and Mary Branner. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Percy Ray of the home, Rev. Donna (Rev. Billy) Branner of Dandridge, Alger (Dennis) Stokely of Newport, Rev. Josephine (Rev. Walter) Bryson of Waynesville, NC, Daniel Ray of Dandridge, Charles (Priscilla) Ray, Sr. of Greeneville, and Edward (Gloria) Ray of Dandridge; sister, Elnora Mattison of Jefferson City; brother-in-law, Walter (Joann) Ray of Dandridge; sisters-in-law, Vivien (Jody) Dockery of Newport, Geraldine (Carl) Dockery of Dandridge; twenty grandchildren, fifty-four great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; a host of cousins, nieces and nephews, including one special nephew, Marshall Evans. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 23, 2012 at Farrar Funeral Home in Dandridge. The homegoing service for Mrs. Ray will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Swannsylvania Road, Dandridge, TN with Pastor Rev. Alex Phipps officiating. The graveside service and interment will follow at Belmont A.M.E. Zion Church Cemetery.
