OBITUARY:
MARTHA VIRGINIA GARLAND BRUMMETT, age 83, of Jefferson City, TN passed away on Wednesday, August 04, 2004 at St. Mary?s Residential Hospice in Knoxville . Born July 20, 1921, she was the only child of the late Isaac McDonald and the late Dollie Johnson Garland of Erwin, TN. She was also preceded in death by her husband, A. L. ?Bo? Brummett, former Jefferson High School principal. Mrs. Brummett attended East Tennessee State University and became a buyer of King?s Department Store in Johnson City, and the head buyer for Unaka Department Store in Erwin, where she enjoyed making several buying trips to New York City each year. She was an active member of the Junior Women?s Club, the First Baptist Church, and was instrumental in starting the first Brownie Troop in Erwin, where she served as the troop leader. In the mid fifties, she and her family moved to Newport, TN where she was employed by the Newport Plain Talk and Tribune. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newport, where she taught the Junior Girl?s Sunday School Class, led Vacation Bible School, and she and Mr. Brummett served as church greeters. She also served as a Girl Scout leader, Girls Auxiliary leader, and was a member of the Twentieth Century Club where she held several offices over the years. After moving to Jefferson City, TN in 1963, the Brummett?s became members of the First Baptist Church where Virginia again taught the Junior Girls Sunday School class. After Mr. Brummett?s death in 1970, she served for a brief period as Head Resident of Burnett Hall at Carson Newman College. She was a member of the Bible Fellowship Class and a member of Lès Amies. Mrs. Brummett is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Beauanne and Dr. Hobart Ford, Jr. of Newport, TN, daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and John Williams of Memphis, TN; grandchildren, Ike Ford of Newport, TN, Beau Ford and wife, Tonia of Knoxville, TN, Virginia Williams of Los Angeles, CA, and Johnny Williams of Seoul, South Korea. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 7, 2004 at Farrar Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Gene Wilder and Rev. James Dampier officiating. Family and friends will gather at 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Evergreen Cemetery in Erwin, TN following the funeral service, for a graveside interment service.. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10 until 11 a.m. Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.
