MARTHA ELIZABETH ARMSTRONG WEBSTER WIDENER, age 97, of Talbott, TN passed away Thursday morning, October 16, 2014. Martha was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and attended True Life Church in her later years. She retired from Magnavox and was a long time employee of Standard Knitting Mills. Martha enjoyed many years of service in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, including serving as President of the post in Jefferson City and in Morristown. She was also District President and was named President of the year for two years. She was Program Chairman of the District VFW. Martha and her husband, Jack Widener were named Mr. and Mrs. VFW in 2008 when Martha was ninety years old. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vinnie and William Armstrong; sisters, Cora Bell Armstrong, Rose Mae Mitchell and Maxie Barnes; brothers, Edward Armstrong, Esco Armstrong and Bill Armstrong; and in-laws, Lennie and Arthur Widener. Martha is survived by her loving husband of fifty-four years, Jack E. Widener; daughters, Shirley (Webster) Hale of Talbott, Karen and Gary Irving of Knoxville; granddaughters, Jamie Hale, Tina Hale and Rachel Vann; great-grandsons, Ryan Hale and Walker Vann.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Smoky Mountain Hospice and Life Care of Jefferson City. Receiving of friends will be from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at Farrar Funeral Home in Jefferson City. The funeral will follow at 2:00 p.m. delivered by Pastor Jimmy Inman. Family and friends will meet following the funeral at Jefferson Memorial Gardens for graveside services given by Pastor Jimmy Inman. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or your favorite charity in Martha’s memory.
