MARSHALL EDWIN HARGRAVE, of Jefferson City, TN passed away August 28, 2010 at Life Care Nursing Home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Helen Goff Hargrave; daughter, Marsha Ellen Hargrave; sisters, Laura Mae Hargrave and Helen Barger; and brothers, Lawrence, Frederick, Marion, Charles, Russell and Harper. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Roberta Gilkerson Hargrave; daughter and son-in-law Barron and Carolyn Lee of Dallas, NC; granddaughter and husband, Lauren and Mark Dixon and great granddaughters, Anna Grace and Ansley Kate Dixon of Gastonia, NC; grandson, B. Whitney Lee of Jefferson City, TN. He is also survived by several nieces and a nephew. Mr. Hargrave was born on a farm near the village of Lewis Station, MO July 20, 1916. The family moved to Clinton, MO when he was in the 4th grade, he graduated from Clinton High School in 1934. During those years of the great Depression jobs were not available for young people. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 and served in Missouri and Idaho until October of 1936. During the WWII years he worked for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, KS until May, 1944 when he was drafted into the US Navy. Following Boot Camp in Farragut, Idaho, he served in Alaska and California until his discharge in June 1946, then returning to Wichita and to Boeing Aircraft.
He made a commitment in January 1947 to pursue a Christian vocation. That fall he enrolled at Oklahoma Baptist University, Shawnee, OK. He graduated in 1950 with a BA Degree. He then attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where he earned his MRE Degree. He began his ministry at First Baptist Church, Albemarle, NC in June 1952. He was called to serve at College Park Baptist Church, Greensboro, NC in 1958. His next place of service was First Baptist Church of Boone, NC for 10 years. He came to Jefferson City First Baptist Church as Minister of Education in 1971, and retired in December 1981 as Minister to Senior Adults. 1982 was a year of transition as he became involved in volunteer work. During the following years he made ten overseas mission trips. He served as coordinator between Tennessee Baptist Convention and the Michigan Baptist Convention for 10 years. He also served as a volunteer for 9 years in two kindergarten classes at Jefferson Elementary School. Mr. Hargrave is the recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award from Carson-Newman College in 1984; The Abundant Life Award from Carson-Newman College in 1994; and the School Bell Award from the Jefferson County Education Association in 1997. Family and friends will gather at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 30, 2010 at Jefferson Memorial Gardens for the Committal Service. A service of Worship and the Celebration of Life at 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 30, 2010 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Gene Wilder and Reverend Barron Lee officiating. The family will receive friends 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday prior to the service at the church.
