J. LAWRENCE MASSENGILL, age 95, (born May 30, 1919), of Powell, TN and formerly of Jefferson City, TN, passed away of natural causes on June 16, 2014 at Tennova Residential Hospice. Lawrence was born and raised on a small farm in Jefferson County, TN. His family was the most important aspect of his life. His most common statement was that he could not have wished for a better family. He was a member of Wallace Memorial Church and a former member of Magna View Baptist Church in Talbott, TN. He is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Virginia McDaniel Massengill; parents, Joe M. and Vada White Massengill; sister, Clara Clark; brothers, Rudolph, Ray, Earl and Otis. He is survived by two very caring and loving daughters, Teresa Faulkner (Eddie) and Janet Sue Jackson (Richard); six grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and special friend, Reva Moore. On December 26, 1943, Lawrence entered active military service where he served 18 months in the European Theater. He drove an ambulance transporting wounded men from collecting stations back to evacuation stations and hospitals. He gave first aid to wounded soldiers on many occasions. With medical training, he cared for the most seriously wounded. At the end of the war he was also part of the group of soldiers who brought men out of POW concentration camps. He was awarded 3 Bronze Stars and the Victory Medal. He participated in battles in the Ardennes, Rhineland, and in Central Europe. In the last months of his life he dealt with the onset of Dementia/Alzheimer’s. The family extends heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful and loving caregivers at both Windsor Garden in Knoxville and most recently, Morning Pointe in Powell, TN. Their loving care, respect, and professional approach to a positive lifestyle provided Lawrence with a happy and fulfilled life. The family would also like to thank Dr. Robert Fehr and his wonderful staff for the continuous loving care that was provided to Lawrence. Funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Farrar Funeral Home with Rev. Kent Williams officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m.
prior to the service. Family and friends will gather at 10:00 a.m. on Friday morning at Farrar Funeral Home to proceed to Jefferson Memorial Gardens for an 11:00 a.m. graveside interment service with military honors. Pallbearers will be sons-in-law, Richard Jackson and Eddie Faulkner; grandsons, Michael Jackson and Kendall Jackson; great-grandsons, Ross McCall and Cameron McCall. Honorary pallbearers include all of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces.
