KENNETH REED (KEN) MANLEY, age 71, of New Market, TN passed away Friday, September 24, 2010. Ken was a life long dairy farmer in the New Market area. His deceased grandfather, Reed Wilson Manley and father, Rolla R. Manley farmed the Jefferson City farm since 1906. Ken now owns and has continued to operate the century old farm. Ken was a 1957 graduate of Jefferson High School, where he served as co-captain of the football team. While still in high school, he joined the National Guard and served his country for 9 ½ years. Ken was a member of the New Market United Methodist Church. He married his high school sweet heart, Grace McMurray Manley, and they have enjoyed 52 years together. Ken loved the farm life and enjoyed watching his crops grow. He was a Holstein breeder and won many awards showing cattle. Showing at our local fairs to the world?s largest cattle show in the world (World Dairy Expo, Madison, Wisconsin) has been most rewarding. Ken was a member of the TN National Holstein Association, TN DHIA, and past president of the Jefferson County Soil Conservation and Farm Bureau. He received various awards including Jefferson Outstanding Farmer and TN State Forage award and first full time farmer District Soil Conservation Award. Willing to try new innovations, he and a neighbor were the first to try no till farming, and he with the UT Extension Service built a solar hay barn. Visitors from several states and foreign countries toured the facility. Preceded in death by his parents, Rolla R. and Shirley H. Manley and grandparents, Reed and Effie Manley. Survived by wife, Grace M. Manley of the home; sons, Stephen K. Manley (Robin) and James Todd Manley of New Market; grandchildren, Elizabeth Grace (E.G.), Stephanie, Mackenzie, Reed and Alexandra Manley of New Market; step grandchildren, Amanda, Kira and Kristy; brother and sister-in-law, R. Gale Manley and Val of Kingsport; sisters-in-law, Betty Roudebush of St. Helena, CA and Imogene Seahorn of Talbott; nieces, Valena Manley Hoy of Norfolk, VA, Sue Jones of Springfield, OH, Victoria Seahorn of Atlanta, GA and Cortney and Kelley Roudebush of San Francisco, CA; nephews, Michael Manley of Lyle Haven, FL and James G. McMurray III of Tuscaloosa, AL. A special thanks to Drs. Grapski, Scaperoth and Meyer and wonderful staff, also Covenant Homecare and Hospice. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 27, 2010 at Farrar Funeral Home, Jefferson City, TN with Reverend Valena Manley Hoy officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, September 26, 2010 at Farrar Funeral Home, Jefferson City, TN.
