Born in 1902 in Hamblen County, Mr. Hale came to Jefferson City in 1918 to attend Carson Newman Preparatory School. After graduating from Carson Newman College and the John R. Neal School of Law, he practiced law in Rutledge and was elected to the state legislature, representing the counties of Grainger and Hancock. He returned to Jefferson City in 1928 to join a law firm and begin a career in banking at the First National Bank of Jefferson City. In addition to his position as Vice President of the bank, Mr. Hale served on the board of Carson Newman College for thirty five years and received the college?s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1971. In 1940, he was one of a group of men who obtained funding from the REA to establish the Appalachian Electric Cooperative, thereby bringing electricity, for the first time, to outlying parts of four counties. Hale served as attorney of the AEC and as a board member until late in his life. He also served on the Jefferson County School Board for fourteen years during a period of major growth. Elementary schools were built or expanded in five different communities and a new high school was built in Jefferson City. During the 1940?s, Mr. Hale also returned to his farming roots with the purchase of a farm near Strawberry Plains. He drew new energy from the farming life that enabled him to manage an agenda constantly filled with new and ongoing projects. Beginning in 1949, Mr. Hale enjoyed living part of the year in Florida and owned a second home in Naples. Mr. Hale was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson City. His wife of 53 years, Mary Lee Nance Hale, died in 1981.
