Joseph M. Word, of Jefferson City, TN passed away February 24, 2016. He was born March 15, 1924 to Philip H. and Lucy R. Word, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his older brother, Philip Rogers Word. He had been a member of the First United Church Methodist Church for over 53 years. Through the years he served on the various committees of the church, having at times headed up the Council on Ministries and the Pastor-Parish relations committee. He was an active member of the Men’s Club and the Barker Forum Sunday School Class. Joe believed in the church and the principles for which it stands. He received recognition from his church for his service with congregational care and was presented the Chamber of Commerce Chairman’s award for similar service in the community. Joe was a War World II veteran. He was a top turret gunner on a B-17 and flew 50 missions over Germany, Austria and Romania. After the war, Joe was graduated from Georgia Tech with a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering. He retired from U.S. Steel with 37 years of service. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Winnie N. Word; his sons Joseph M. (Marc) Word II (Betsy), and Philip N. Word (Janet); his grandchildren, Joseph M. Word III (Meagan), Lauren Word Lewis (Dallas) and Benjamin W. Word; and his bonus grandchildren, Taylor Bowman (Megan) and Leah Bowman. He is also survived by his brother, Bradley P. Word (Charlotte), sister-in-law, Jenny Word; sister-in-law, Billy Vaughan (Tommy), and nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Joe’s life will be held at First United Methodist Church of Jefferson City, TN on Saturday February 27th at 2:00 PM in the sanctuary. Before the service the family will receive friends in the chapel of the church between 1 and 2 PM.
