JOHN WESLEY HILL, affectionately known as "Coach Hill", age 69, a life-long resident of Dandridge, TN passed away suddenly Sunday, July 27, 2014 while visiting in Crossville, TN. He was born May 6, 1945, the son of the late Herbert and Rubye Slover Hill. He was preceded in death by his brother, Edd Hill and special aunt, Daisy Slover Vance, whom he lived with for many years. John graduated from Maury High School, where he served as basketball captain, earned a B.S. degree from Carson-Newman College and served in the US Army Reserves and Air Guard. Coach Hill began his teaching and coaching career at Piedmont Elementary in the late 1960’s and went on to become the head basketball coach at Maury High School. Following the consolidation of the county high schools he served for many years as assistant coach at Jefferson Co. High School and Carter High School (Knox Co.) where he met his wife of 28 years. He retired as a Driver’s Education instruction specialist from Jefferson Co. High School with over 46 years of service, but continued his teaching and coaching career as a substitute teacher and basketball coach. He was a member of the Dandridge First United Methodist Church. Coach Hill dedicated his life to educating and coaching the youth of Jefferson and Knox Counties. His goal was to inspire young people to do their best as students, athletes and leaders in their community. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Webb Hill; son, Andy Hill; mother-in-law, Betty Webb; sister-in-law, Pam Hill; brother-in-law, Doug (Brenda) Webb. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes family and friends to make memorial gifts to the Leroy Shannon Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1025, Dandridge, TN 37725, or the Jefferson County Humane Society, P.O. Box 653, Jefferson City, TN 37760. Funeral services, Wednesday, July 30, 2014, 7:00pm at the First Baptist Church of Dandridge with Dr. Robert Brown officiating and eulogy by George Yardley. Interment graveside services, Thursday, 11:00am at Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon and evening from 4:00 to 7:00pm prior to services at the church.
