JOHN BOYD GIBSON, age 80, of Jefferson City, TN passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at Jefferson Memorial Hospital. He was born to the late Newton and Edith Gibson on July 21, 1931 in Murphy, North Carolina. John graduated from Murphy High School and received an Associate Degree from Young Harris College and received a BA and MA in Education from Appalachian State Teacher?s College in 1959 in Boone, NC. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955 with an honorable discharge. John was a College Professor of Education at Carson Newman College in Jefferson City until his retirement in 1996. Mr. Gibson served as a city councilman in Jefferson City for many years and also as vice mayor. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson City since 1963. John was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to everyone he met. John is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Eva Nell Gibson of Jefferson City; five children, John Lamar (Aimee) Gibson of Jefferson City, Charles Richard (Sharon) Gibson of Jefferson City, Robert Gary (Stephanie) Gibson of Mississippi, Walter Boyd Gibson and special friend, Frances Shampine of Morristown, George Morris (Doris) Gibson of South Carolina; five grandsons; brother, Herbert Gibson; sisters, Christine Stovall, Kathleen McGuire, Madelyn Chambers, Geraldine Lominac and Jane Stiles; several nieces and nephews. Special thanks to the care givers at Fort Sanders Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center, Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Chandler House, University of TN Medical Center, Holston Health and Rehab Center, Jefferson County Nursing Home; and all doctors and nurses who assisted in his care. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning, September 3, 2011 at First Baptist Church of Jefferson City with Dr. Gene Wilder officiating. Interment will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends Friday evening, September 2, 2011 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Farrar Funeral Home in Jefferson City.
