William Edward Schneider, age 87 of Dandridge, was called home to be with the Lord on December 8, 2023. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 3, 1936. For thirty years he worked as a mechanical engineer for the U.S. Navy as a civilian employee in Annapolis, Maryland at the David Taylor Research and Development Laboratory. He helped develop the ballast system including designing a part for Alvin, the submersible that found the Titanic. He retired to Dandridge in 1994. Bill was noted for his quick wit, bringing a laugh or smile to many. He was outgoing and had a unique personality. He was very involved with Dandridge First United Methodist Church, serving first as a trustee and later as chairman of the trustees. He held this same position at his former church, Cape St. Claire United Methodist Church in Annapolis, Maryland. During the course of his life, he volunteered with the Boy Scouts, the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, Dandridge Ministerial Association Thrift Store and tutoring children. Bill loved being outside. His hobbies included woodworking and DIY projects. In his younger years, he enjoyed tennis, volleyball, softball and hiking. He loved being on the water and enjoyed sailing. He was a pickleball enthusiast, playing right up to just before his 87th birthday. He was preceded in death by his parents William Daniel Schneider and Margaret (Dennerlein) Schneider, and his brother, Carl (Marcia) Schneider. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Julia (Rogers) Schneider, daughters Justine (Scott) Handwerger of Severna Park, Maryland and Paige (David) Harnett of Knoxville; grandchildren Casey (Andrew) Gallehugh of Dallas, Texas, Camden Handwerger of Dallas, Texas, and Riley Handwerger of Severna Park, Maryland, in addition to a sister-in-law and two nieces. The family will receive friends from 2pm to 3pm Friday, December 15, 2023, at Dandridge First United Methodist Church with the service to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dandridge First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 8, Dandridge, TN 37725, or Smoky Mountain Home Health and Hospice.
