Imogene (Jean) Hill Rutledge, age 96, of Jefferson City, TN passed away early on January 29, 2012 at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville, TN of complications of cardiac and pulmonary disease. Since losing her husband in February 2010, she had resided in Maryville, TN with her son and daughter-in-law.
Born September 3, 1915 to the late Ben D. Hill and Hattie Raines Hill in Cocke County, TN, she was raised and lived in Cocke and Jefferson Counties. She was a graduate of New Market High School. She was married to her beloved husband Charles (Charlie) J. Rutledge April 1946. In 1952 she became the adored mother of Charles David (Dave) Rutledge and devoted herself to managing a nurturing home for her family. As her parents became infirm, she was a pillar of strength in their comfort and care. A devout Christian, she had been an active member of Northside Baptist, Magna-View Baptist and most recently Emmanuel Baptist Church and had served as an intermediate girls and an adult Sunday School teacher, as well as a participant in several church service organizations. She was blessed with a relatively long period after Charlie retired to enjoy his companionship, and the company of her extended family, gardening, and local travel.
She is survived by her son Charles David (Dave) Rutledge, Pharm.D., M.D. and daughter-in-law Jean Styke Rutledge, DPh. of Maryville, TN: brother-in-law Robert F. Sellers of Jefferson City, TN; sister-in-law Jo Scott of Arcadia, IN; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Charles (Charlie) Joe Rutledge, parents Ben D. and Hattie R. Hill, brother James F. Hill and sister-in-law Ruby, brother William R. Hill and sister-in-law Bonnie, sister Wilma Hill Sellers, and brothers-in-law/sisters-in-laws W. Harold Rutledge and June, L. Paul Rutledge and Inez, Ed and Edith Pappas, brother-in law Leon D. (Shortie) Rutledge, sisters-in-law Frances Rutledge and Edna Davis, and nephew Pete Davis.
Family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 3, 2012 at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Sonny Strange officiating. Interment graveside service to follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
