HAZEL HUMPHRYS passed away in Ruston, LA on April 17, 2004 at the age of 101. She was born on July 14, 1902 in Madola, GA to John Alderson Gilbert and Nora Thomas Gilbert. Hazel grew up on the family farm in Polk County, TN and graduated from Polk County High School in 1921. She taught elementary school in Polk County until 1927, when she married james Brownlow Humphrys, also of Polk county. She and her husband moved to Florida in 1927, where he was employed by the Florida Power and Light Company. They remained in Florida for 50 years, living in Ftl. Pierce and Miami. Hazel continued to teach school in both cities and raised a son and daughter. In 1977, Haxel and her husband moved back to Tennessee, settling in Jefferson City. Her husband passed away in 1986, and in 1977 she moved to Ruston, LA to live with her daughter. She is survived by her daughger, Sur Holder of Ruston, LA; son, James Humphyrts of Melbourne, FL; fibe grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; sisters, Adeline Lillard of Jefferson City, TN, Dorothy Davis of Conasauga, TN and Alice Sheidler of Erwin, TN. Hazel was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. We commit her to God's loving care. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 23, 2004 from the Farrar Funeral Home Chapel in Jefferson City with Rev. Jerry Colbery officiating. Interment will follow in Jefferson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the service.
