HARRY CHRISTOPHER PHIPPS, JR., (better known as Scrap Iron and Junior) age 84, of Jefferson City, TN passed away on Saturday morning, October 31, 2015 at Life Care Center of Jefferson City. He served three years in the U. S. Army, stationed in Japan. Following his service, he was a driver for Biddle’s Junk Yard. Following a stroke in December of 1961, he was blessed to manage farmland to provide for his family. Harry was a faithful member of Young’s Memorial AME Zion Church in new Market, TN, where he served the Trustee Board, Superintendent of the Sunday School Board, Lay Council, senior Choir, Men’s Chorus, and Men’s Booster Club. He was also a volunteer at area hospitals and nursing homes. Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Phipps, Sr. and Annie K. (Bryant) Phipps; sisters, Naomia (Phipps) Moore and Eula Mae (Phipps) Stokes; brother, Charles Bryant; along with three grandchildren. Harry is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary (Sheets) Phipps; daughter, Mary Ann (Tommy) Thomas of Knoxville; sons, Alex (Connie) Phipps, Sr., and Darwin “Kenny” Phipps, both of New Market, TN; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Ledford and Thelma Brown; sisters-in-law, Susan Smith, Barbara Sheets, Gladys (George) Clay; and brother-in-law, James (Elaine) Sheets. A home going celebration will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Farrar Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. Entombment service will follow the funeral at Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
