Harley Dean Smith

Harley Dean Smith, Jr. age 74 formerly of White Pine, passed away on January 14, 2018 after a lengthy illness with Parkinson disease and later cancer. Dean was an active outdoorsman with interests in bear hunting, fishing, and showing horses, which produced him 9 world titles and 32 State, along with several other wins. He was involved in the horse industry not only showing, but also as a judge, including the Racking Horse Celebration. Dean would lend a helping hand to others at shows if asked. He enjoyed having his horse show buddy, Joseph Peters at his side at the shows. Dean loved his work in law enforcement where he served as the former Chief Deputy of Jefferson County Sheriff Department under Sheriff Tom Eslinger, and was the retired Chief of Police for the White Pine Police Department. Dean always tried to assist people in trouble with advice. The 25 years he worked, he had numerous stories to tell and had considered a book, but never found the time. He was quite a person, but loved to play pranks and jokes. He would always say when asked why he didn’t say much “Someone has to listen.” Preceded in death by his parents; Harley Dean Sr. and Gertrude Holloway Smith, grandson; Thomas Byrd, sister; Alice Lively, Aunt; Margaret Bevin. Survived by friend, companion and devoted caregiver Brenda Andies of 22 years, Daughters; Deana(James)Geno, Katrina(Eddie) McDaniel, grandchildren; Brittany Cona, Kritsie McDaniel, Samantha McDaniel, Latashia Meetz, and Elizabeth Peters, Great grandson; Edward McDaniel, Brother-in-Law; Willis Lively, Brothers; Tommy Smith, David(Mary) Smith, Aunt; Sally Holloway, His horse showing buddy Joseph Peters. The family will receive friends on Tuesday January 16, 2018 from 5:00-7:00p.m. with funeral services to follow at 7:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of White Pine with the Reverend Brian Osborne and Bernie Cagle officiating. Graveside services will be Wednesday January 17, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at White Pine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be White Pine Police Officers: Paul Lowe, Chad Cotter, Arlie Ball, Charlie Epps, Mark McCarter, and Rodney Sexton. Honorary Pallbearers will be Tommy Shaver, Al Large, Eric Large, David(Red) Reneau, David Davenport, Rick Scroggins, Teddy Andies, Norm Hunley, Vaughn Moore, Michael Etter, Doug Crum and all of his horse show friends.
