GEORGE LEON RUTHERFORD, age 78, of Dandridge, TN passed away Monday, October 27, 2003 at Colonial Hills Nursing Home in Maryville, TN. He was retired sheet metal worker for American Enka Corp. at Lowland. His brilliant mind contributed beyond his routine duties. He was a member of the French Broad Baptist Church and enjoyed serving his church and the community. Mr. Rutherford was a veteran of World War II, having server with the 36th Armored Infantry of the 3rd Armored Division of the U. S. Army. These forces were part of the D-Day invasion and liberated France and Germany. His time in the military was a great source of pride in his life and was always cherished. He is survived by his daughter, Debbie Batson; grandsons, Brent and Brandon Batson of Maryville, TN; former wife, Betty McKay Rutherford of Dandridge; daughter, Shery Jameson; grandchildren, Kristen and Ethan of Virginia; sisters and brother, Mildred Frahl of Newport, Evelyn and Glen Reynolds of Knoxville; Earl and Imogene Rutherford of Morristown. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gideons International, 760 Coile Rd, Jefferson City, TN 37760. Military graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003 at Dandridge Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Volunteer State Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
