OBITUARY:
FRANCES EMILY NEWMAN CATE, age 88, of Old Dandridge Pike, New Market, TN passed away March 18, 2006. She was the daughter of Samuel Rankin Newman and Della Mallena Byerley Newman. She graduated from Maury High School and from Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC. She was a devoted member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Dandridge for 68 years and attended there until January. Frances worked in the Jefferson County courthouse for many years in the county schools office. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Maurice Cate; her parents; sister, Nancy Jones; brothers, Sam Newman, John Newman and Dave Newman; and brother-in-law, Cecil Jones. She is survived by her daughter, Lena Beth Cate Carmichael; and grandson, Cole Carmichael of Riceville, TN; sisters-in-law, Marguerite Newman of Eustis, FL and Bonnie Cate Hudgens of Knoxville, TN; niece, Bobbie Newman Burkhart of Birmingham, AL; nephews, David Jones of Dandridge, Darrell Newman of New Market, and Grant Newman of Eustis, FL; great nephew and great nieces. She was especially comforted in recent years by her great niece, Rachel Jones Glenn and dear friend, William Denton. She will be missed for her love, personality, wit and Christian life. She was a wonderful, supportive wife, mother and grandmother. Memorial service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Monday, March 20, 2006 at Hopewell Presbyterian Church with Reverend Mark Knisley officiating. Pallbearers will be Cole Carmichael, William Denton, Darrell Newman, David Jones, Jerry Shoemaker, Robert Burlingham, Ashley Glenn and Frank Rankin. Honorary pallbearers will be Creed Burkhart and Paul McNeil. Family and friends will gather at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at Hopewell Presbyterian Church to proceed to Oak Grove Cemetery for an 11:00 a.m. graveside interment service. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hopewell Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 215, Dandridge, TN 37725.
