EVAN PHILIP COMER, born May 29, 1927 at Cumberland Gap, TN, died Saturday, January 31, 2015 at his residence in Morristown, TN. After graduating from Middlesboro, KY High School in 1944, he served in the Pacific in the U. S. Navy in World War II. In 1948 he graduated from Carson Newman College in Jefferson City, TN, completed his graduate school education at Columbia University in New York City, and took his first job thereafter as a professor at Furman University in Greenville, SC. He served as President of Southeastern Community College in Whiteville, NC and retired in 1984 as President and CEO of Foote Mineral Company, headquartered in Exton, PA. While living in PA he was an active member of the Second Baptist Church of Germantown and was ordained as a deacon in that church in 1962. After his retirement in 1984 he was an active farmer in Grainger County, TN for eight years, served three terms on the TVA Regional Resource Stewardship Council, five years as a member of the Jefferson County Planning Commission, and 5 years as a member of the Jefferson County Board of Zoning Appeals. He served as an active deacon in the First Baptist Church of Jefferson City, TN and was commissioned as a Stephen Minister by that church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mary Blanc Comer in 2007; parents, Evan Mitchell Comer and Margaret Nola Estep Comer. He is survived by one daughter, Jane Elizabeth Tenanty (Bob) of Cambridge, MD. Family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
