OBITUARY:
ERNEST HOWARD MASSIE , age 87, loving husband, father and grandfather, of Jefferson City, Tennessee, passed away on Monday morning, November 15, 2004 at his home following a valiant battle with cancer. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson City, former Industrial Relations Manager at Jefferson City Magnavox and was a pilot with the U. S. Air Force during World War II. He was a past president of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, Carson-Newman College Trustee and Advisory Board, Cherokee Health Systems Board of Directors, Jefferson County Rescue Squad Board of Directors, JCVC Board of Directors, Red Cross Board of Directors, and recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award from Carson-Newman College. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Linnise Sullivan Massie; his parents, Louis and Lillie Mae Massie; sister, Meredith Murphy; and brother, Raymond Massie. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Richard Couch of Livermore, California; Joan and Danny Bolden of Jefferson City, Tennessee; Jill Massie-Braun and Ian Braun of Jefferson City, Tennessee; son and daughter-in-law, Dewayne and Janet Massie of Knoxville, Tennessee; grandchildren, Kristin Couch Walker, Erin Couch, Kevin Bolden, Kieran Braun, Nicholas and Elissa Massie; great grandchildren, Devin and Dylan Walker; sister, Martha Sigler; brother, William Massie; several nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m. Friday, November 19, 2004 at First Baptist Church of Jefferson City with Dr. Gene Wilder officiating. Family and friends will gather at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, November 20, 2004 at Jefferson Memorial Gardens for a 10:00 a.m. graveside interment service. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 6:00 p.m. Friday, November 19, 2004 at First Baptist Church prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts may be made to the Autism Society of America-East Tennessee Chapter, c/o Sara Hirtz, 10201 Green Spring Lane, Knoxville, TN 37932. Gifts will be used to continue research and provide support to families in this area who love and care for individuals with autism, or to the American Cancer Society, 871 Weisgarber Road, Knoxville, TN 37909.
