Dolores Helen Bettis, 84, of Jefferson City, TN, passed away February 26, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale K. Bettis, her parents, Mr. & Mrs. James A. Holloway, and her brother, James A. Holloway, Jr.
She is survived by her sister Evelyn Ousley, brother-in-law Ralph Ousley, and sister-in-law Sue Holloway, of Maryville; son and daughter-in-law Norris Lee Â?DustyÂ? and Rebecca of Hixon; grandchildren Joshua Stephen, LT (JG), USN, Naval Air Station, Kingsville, Texas, Andrew Dale, Michael Lee, Midshipman 3rd Class, US Naval Acadamy, Annapolis, Maryland, and Rachel Anne; daughter Debra Holly Woodroof of Greensboro, NC and granddaughters Samantha Jane and Anna Marie; daughter Dixie Lynn Bettis of Pigeon Forge; son and daughter-in-law Donald Dale and Connie of New Market, granddaughter Dolores Taylor, grandson Dusty Hensley, and many other friends and family.
She was born on May 11, 1924. A graduate of the Everett High School in 1942, she worked as a secretary at Alcoa Aluminum and was a proof reader at the Jefferson Standard Banner. She was a volunteer and later an employee for many years at Jefferson Memorial Hospital where she served as head of Volunteer Services, as a Pink Lady, as a Chaplain, and as the manager of the gift shop.
She was a life long member of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson City, where she was a member of the Agape Sunday School class, the WomenÂ?s Ministry Group, and was a Choir Mother. She was also a member of the Christian WomenÂ?s Club of Morristown.
She was a great supporter of Carson-Newman College, a CNC library volunteer, and a member of the CNC Les Amies. She served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She was a member of the APTA and a great supporter of Glenmore Mansion. She was a member of the Sans Souci Club. She was an avid bridge player and a member of the Progressive Bridge Club and Couples Club. She loved gardening, was a member of the Garden Study Club, won numerous awards for flower arranging and served as a judge at area flower shows. An avid bowler and golfer, she was a member of the Jefferson City Bowling League and had a hole-in-one at Lost Creek Golf Course.
She was an officer of the Jefferson County Republican Women and the League of Women Voters, co-chairman of the 1976 Jefferson County Bicentennial celebration, and was named Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year. She actively campaigned for Jimmy Quillen, Fred Thompson, Ben Hooper, Lamar Alexander and Victor Ashe.
The family wishes to acknowledge her good friend, Jim Collignon of Manor House Assisted Living in Knoxville. They also wish to thank the friends and staff at Manor House, Jefferson Health and Rehab, Holston Health and Rehab, and especially the staff of 3rd Central at St. MaryÂ?s Hospital and her special caregiver, Cleo Taylor of New Market, for their loving and compassionate care.
Receiving of friends will be Saturday, February 28, from five to seven p.m. at Farrar Funeral Home in Jefferson City. The service will be held Sunday, March 1, at 4:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with internment following at West View Cemetary.
