CLAUCE NELSON CHAFIN
Before the break of day on the morning of August 24, 2016, while surrounded by the love of his family, Claude Nelson Chafin heard God’s call and crossed the bar to gain his heavenly home. His smile, his laugh, his love, and his guidance will be forever missed, but it is comforting to know that he loved Christ so deeply that he now surely abides in Heaven. His was a life well lived, time well spent, and friends well loved.
Claude was born in New Town, WV, on September 22, 1933. He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict and then pursued a college degree in education. During his teaching career in Mingo County, WV, he touched many lives of students, parents, and co-workers.
He is survived by Margaret Simpkins Chafin, his loving wife of 59 wonderful and blessed years. He leaves behind two children, Claude (Lydia) Chafin and Patricia (Danny) McCoy, both of White Pine, TN. In addition, he was the grandfather of three grandsons that he treasured with all his heart: Jeffrey Travis Chafin, Daniel Claude McCoy, and Steven Michael McCoy, all of White Pine. Also surviving him are two brothers, Billy Chafin of Roanoke, VA, and Joe Chafin of Huntington, WV, and one sister, Sandra Miller of Dayton, Ohio. There is also a wealth of family and friends who loved Claude and were an important part of his life who will miss him daily; many of the staff members of Jefferson County Nursing Home became like family to him and his household in the past few years.
Claude is preceded in death by his father Leonard Chafin, his mother, Elizabeth Harth Chafin, and four brothers, Robert, Johnny, Tony, and Jimmy who surely met him on the other shore to welcome him home.
