CHESTER F. (CHET) BERGMAN, age 94, of Jefferson City, TN entered his eternal home on Tuesday, May 9, 2017. He was born in Ottawa County, Michigan on October 31, 1922. He graduated from Union High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan before earning his Bachelor’s Degree from Calvin College and a Master’s Degree from the University of Michigan. He then taught in elementary schools for thirteen years and Western Illinois University for three years. Before retiring in 1989, he taught for nineteen years at Carson Newman University. During that time and later, he taught adult Sunday School classes for over sixty years. He was an elder at First Presbyterian Church of Jefferson City. Chet was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Jefferson County for forty-six years and served terms as president, secretary, and treasurer of the club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Hannah Bergman; two sisters and six brothers. He is survived by his wife of thirty-eight years, Carol Cook Bergman; step-sons, David McLeay (Susan) of Niceville, Florida and Scott McLeay of Knoxville; step-daughters, Lisa Layman (David) of New Market and Patricia Livesay (Craig) of Talbott; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews in Michigan. Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church, Jefferson City with Reverend Dave Strickler officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Graveside interment service will follow the funeral at Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
