CHARLES EDWARD PIPER III, age 87, of Jefferson City, TN passed away February 15, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family. He was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church of Jefferson City, a life time member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and was retired from U. S. Steel Corporation Zinc Mine Division in Jefferson City. He began his career as an Industrial Engineer and retired as the General Superintendent with 36 years of service. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served in Europe during World War II. After his military service, he attended the University of Alaska. While there, he climbed Mt. McKinley, and reached the summit on July 13, 1948. He then graduated from Missouri School of Mines. Preceded in death by his loving wife of 26 years, Marie Batson Piper; parents, Charles Edward Piper, Jr. and Frances Griffen Piper; and brother, Bob Piper. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Sara Spivey Piper; children, Greg Piper (Cindy), Eddie Piper (Becky), Lynn Piper-Key, Debbie Spivey-Hyde (Bill), Jim Spivey (Traci), Fran Spivey-Joyner( John), and Johnny Spivey (Jamie); eleven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Don Piper (Vonnie); sister-in-law, Jere Piper; several nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 18, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Andrew Whaley officiating. Reception will follow the service. A private inurnment service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Pastor?s Discretionary Fund, 721 Church Street, Jefferson City, TN 37760.
