CATHERINE ANNE "CATHY" TAYLOR, age 79, passed away Sunday, October 26, 2008 at her home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina after a long battle with cancer. She was born on May 10, 1929 in Morristown, TN. and formerly lived in Jefferson County, TN. Preceded in death by her parents, William G. and Ethel W. Taylor; brothers, John C. Taylor and William B. Taylor; nephew, Joseph C. Taylor; sisters-in-law, Betty R. Taylor (Mrs. Frank C.) and Sarah H. Taylor (Mrs. John C.). She is survived by her brother, Frank C. Taylor of Newport, Arkansas; sister-in-law, Louise N. Taylor (Mrs. William B.) of Dandridge; nieces and nephews, Helen T. Quarles of Jefferson City, Carolyn T. Raymond of Clarksville, Robert R. Taylor of Newport, Arkansas, William G. Taylor of Brentwood, J. Daniel Taylor of Talbott and Becky Taylor Cooper of Knoxville; 15 great-nieces and great-nephews; two great-great nieces and one great-great nephew. She was reared in East Tennessee and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Carson Newman College in Jefferson City. She received her M. D. from the University of Tennessee School of Medicine in Memphis in 1957. After internship, she practiced medicine as a general practitioner in Harlan County, Kentucky in the coal mining area of Eastern Kentucky for two years. She then returned to Memphis, completed a residency in pediatrics and was a pediatrician in Hickory, North Carolina for three years before coming to Chapel Hill in 1965. She completed the University of North Carolina, (UNC) Department of Psychiatry training program in adult psychiatry and a two-year child psychiatry fellowship. She was board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both general and child psychiatry. She served on the faculty of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine for 27 years with joint appointments in the Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatrics. Her primary focus was on consultation-liasion psychiatry. She was an emeritus professor in psychiatry at UNC and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatry Association. In 1994, she received the George C. Ham Society Distinguished Alumni award in Psychiatry from the UNC Department of Psychiatry. A memorial service was held Saturday, November 1 at the University Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill where she was a member. Memorial contributions may be made to UNC Hospice, P.O.
