Carolyn O'Dell Quarles

Carolyn O’Dell Quarles, age 89, passed away on January 17, 2021 in Jefferson City, TN. She was born on December 14, 1931 in Newport, TN. Mrs. Quarles retired in Morristown after teaching English for over thirty years. Throughout her career, she touched countless students’ lives with her innovative teaching style, her high expectations, and her contagious sense of humor. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Morristown for many years. Forty of those years were devoted to teaching a women’s Sunday school class. Her unfailing faith in God and her steadfast devotion to her family were the most important aspects of her life. She served well, she loved deeply, and she prayed fervently every day of her life. Those who knew her best, knew without fail that each morning by name she prayed for her children, her grandchildren, her friends, our country, and countless other concerns of her heart. One never left her presence without a hug, a smile, or without knowing that you were loved. Preceded in death by her husband, Gene J. Quarles; parents, Aaron and Belle O’Dell; sister, Bettye Overholt (Dale); and nephew, Eddie Overholt. She is survived by her daughters, Patti Clement (Wayne), Carol Monroe (Dr. Steve); grandchildren, Dr. Nan Black (Dr. David), Katie Cantrell (Jacob), Dr. Parker Clement (Ashley), Caroline Feltman (Spencer), and Maggie Clement; four great-grandchildren, John Rupert Black, James Fox Black, Monroe Elizabeth Feltman, and Clark Henry Feltman; brother, Gerald O’Dell (Judy); and a host of nieces and nephews. Imagine her rejoicing as Matthew 25:21 came true in her precious life, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou has been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” A private graveside service was held at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Jefferson City, TN.
