Calvin Stewart Metcalf, D. Min., 80, Jefferson City, TN passed away Wednesday, September 10, 2014. He was born on July 23, 1934 in Mars Hill, NC to John Stewart and Maude Martin Metcalf. He was raised in Marshall, North Carolina and graduated from Marshall High School in 1952. He later graduated from Mars Hill College (1954), Carson Newman College (1956), and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (M. Div. 1960, D. Min. 1975). Calvin pastored several Baptist churches throughout the Southeast: Hot Springs North Carolina, Bethel Hill North Carolina Dortches, Rocky Mount, NC, Immanuel, Elizabethton, TN, Eau Claire, Columbia, SC, and Central Baptist of Fountain City, Knoxville, TN. He was interim pastor at FBC Clinton, TN, FBC, Oneida, TN, FBC Jefferson City, First Presbyterian Jefferson City and Newport Presbyterian Newport, TN. Calvin served as president for local pastor’s conferences and moderated local Baptist associations. He was president of the General Board of South Carolina serving on various committees with General Board of South Carolina and with the Tennessee Baptist Convention. He was president of the Tennessee Baptist Convention in 1989. He served as a trustee of Carson Newman College for over 15 years. He loved his alma mater and served her well receiving an Honorary Doctorate from CNC in 1985. Calvin was an avid writer, writing various Sunday School lessons, articles, and devotion materials as well as authoring various books. He loved preaching and led revivals and presented dramatic monologues all over the Southeast and in various foreign countries.
In May 1956, Calvin married Barbara Jean Rushbrook of Arlington, VA. Calvin is survived by wife, Barbara of Jefferson City, TN, son -Gary (Penny) Metcalf, Kingsport, TN, daughter, Karen (Bruce) Eickhoff, Raleigh, NC, and daughter Tina Metcalf Olive of Raleigh, NC. Granddaughters, Haley Olive and Kayla Metcalf. -Two sisters: Yvonne (Robert) Revis, Fayetteville, NC and Myra(James) Hall, Mullins, SC. One brother: Sam (Elaine) Metcalf, Houston, TX. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Calvin is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Wilma Wix and a grandson, Jonathan Stewart Metcalf.
A memorial service is scheduled for 3:00pm on Sunday, September 14 at the First Baptist Church, Jefferson City, TN. Visitation will follow after the service in the Sanctuary.
