BENJAMIN (BENNIE) (BEN) CARMICHAEL, age 84, of White Pine, TN passed away Tuesday evening, October 20, 2009. He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, White Pine Lions Club, and was a prominent farmer of Jefferson County and also enjoyed hunting. He was a graduate of Maury High School, received his master?s degree from the University of Tennessee, and his PhD from Peabody College, and was a teacher and principal in various school districts and served as superintendent of Chattanooga city schools, and also served as Commissioner of Education for the state of Tennessee under Governor Winfield Dunn, later he served as a trustee emeritus of the University of Tennessee . His educational career also included Director of Appalachian Educational Laboratory and retired as a dean of East Tennessee State University. He was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corp, having served during World War II in the South Pacific. Survived by wife, Daisy Carmichael; daughters, Sue (Wade) Little, Robbie Carmichael; sons, David (Mary Lou) Carmichael, Dan (Carol) Carmichael; ten grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary (Leon) Rogers of Talbott and Bobbie Lawson of White Pine; brother, Don (Jeanette)Carmichael of White Pine. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 25, 2009 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Hicks officiating. Interment will follow the service at Ebenezer Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Farrar Funeral Home in White Pine. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 1122 Ebenezer Church Road, Talbott, TN 37877.
